We have authored three patents for our work around epigenetics and developed the world’s first saliva-based NGS epigenetic biomarker for biological age and the first CE-marked saliva-based COVID-19 PCR test.
Our scientific focus areas are:
- Biomarker research & development – discovering novel biomarkers for complex risk factors and diseases using multi-omics datasets and deploying them in cost-effective platforms.
- Epigenetics and machine-learning – pushing the boundaries of DNA methylation based biomarkers, which are able to quantify the effects of genetics and lifestyle at the molecular level.

That’s why each laboratory we use to process samples is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This means they must continually meet stringent internal and external quality control protocols.
Furthermore, our expert team carefully vets and maintains a close ongoing relationship with each lab partner in our network, so you can be sure of the highest testing standards.

At-home sample collection that meets clinical standards
Quality and accuracy are essential when it comes to health testing. Therefore, the at-home sample collection methods we develop and use are validated against conventional methods to meet strict standards for accuracy and reliability.
Our sample collection kits are UKCA and CE-marked, meaning they meet health and safety requirements within the European Economic Area (EEA), and are accredited as medical devices under ISO 13485. We cover specimen types across venous blood, capillary blood (finger prick and upper arm devices), saliva, urine, stool, nasal swabs, vaginal swabs and many more.

Experts at every step of the process
Hurdle was founded by leading scientists from Cambridge and Oxford universities, who spent their academic careers focusing on preventative healthcare, epigenetics of ageing, computational biology and novel omics technologies. They combine their expertise with experienced medical doctors and operations specialists to oversee each stage of the diagnostic testing process, including which biomarkers to test and the best scientific methods for each.
Hira Javaid, PHD
R&D Scientist
Hira is an R&D Scientist at Hurdle, with a special focus on DNA methylation and biomarker discovery through bioinformatics tools. Hira completed her PhD in Oncology at the University of Oxford, using machine learning to develop a DNA methylation biomarker for early cancer detection for renal and pancreatic cancer. Hira is also an avid juggler, Youtuber, and admissions coach.

AI / Machine Learning Engineer
Constantin Cezar Petrescu holds a PhD in Computer Science, specialising in Program Analysis and Data-Driven Analysis. He has extensive experience in machine learning, program analysis, and information security. At Hurdle, Constantin contributes to the development of innovative AI-powered health solutions.
